At the age of 11, Alex initially aspired to learn guitar, but it wasn’t offered in middle school orchestra. Upright bass was the closest thing to guitar offered, and ironically both upright and electric bass became his favorite instrument for years to come. Driven by an innate talent, Alex quickly found solace and joy in playing several instruments including bass, piano, and guitar. His first band was formed at the age of 12 alongside two childhood friends.

Alex’s later bands, from Charlie Bell to The Sidepiece Collective and Swiss Banks, is where he gained a rich and varied experience playing world music, funk, and jazz. As bassist in afrobeat funk band, Cazayoux, Alex continues to evolve as a musician especially when it comes to improvisation and experimentation. Teaching became a way to inspire others along their musical journeys.

“My favorite part about teaching is seeing students fall in love with their instruments the same way that I did. I love how universal music is and having the opportunity to play with people from all over the world. People like music even if they don’t understand it.”
